Abstract

Aim: This study was to compare 3 dimensional titanium (3-D) and titanium (Champy's) miniplate fixation in the mandibular fractures to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of one over the other.

Material and Methods: 40 patients diagnosed with anterior mandibular fractures with or without other associated mandibular fractures reporting to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Al – Ameen Dental College and Hospital, Vijayapura, requiring open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) were selected for the study. 20 patients were randomly divided into Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 received 3D plate fixation and Group 2 received miniplates fixation. Radiological evaluation of healing was done using Orthopantamograph (OPG), PA mandible, and occlusal x-ray. Stability of fixation and post-operative complications were compared between the two groups.

Results: The difference in group 1 and group 2 was statistically significant, with the group 1 showing better results as compared to group 2.

Conclusion: It was concluded that titanium 3D miniplates are better than conventional miniplates. 3D plate can be used as an alternative to conventional miniplates. The system is reliable and effective treatment modality for mandibular fractures.
