Abstract

The publication of several case reports of zolpidem and zopiclone dependence has dispelled the belief of the Z category hypnotics being devoid of abuse 1-3 4 potential . In this context zolpidem extended-release has been considered to be a better alternative . The past decade has seen a significant increase in 1, 2, 3 prescriptions of zolpidem ER by primary care physicians .

We report two cases of zolpidem extended-release dependence, which presented to us over a period of seven months, to advocate cautious use of this drug for insomnia.
