Abstract

Back ground: To address the theme of world breastfeeding 2013 – breastfeeding support close to mothers, the present study was conducted.

Objective: To study the effect of breastfeeding training program among women of self help groups (SHG) in rural areas. Methods:Women from self help groups in the field practising areas of rural health training centre (RHTC) were identified. They were sensitized on counselling mothers for exclusive breastfeeding, show the mothers how to position the infants and attach the infants to the breast. Pre and post test was done to evaluate our program.

Results: Following training there was significant improvement in knowledge regarding early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding among the women. Before training none of the women were aware about the key aspects of positioning and attachment and it improved significantly following training.

Conclusion: The training program was well accepted by the women and it significantly improved their knowledge regarding breastfeeding.
