Abstract

Background: In order to keep our services, teaching and research at our Rural Health Training Centre in alignment with the needs of the local community, we did community needs assessment. Objectives: To explore the common health problems and health needs of the community in order to formulate a need based plan and strategy.

Methods: We used qualitative method (Focus Group Discussion, FGD) and quantitative method (questionnaire survey in local community) for needs assessment.

Results: The major problem in the community was non communicable diseases which comprised diabetes 118 (39.5%), hypertension 80 (26.8%), heart diseases 25(8.4%). The focus group discussion revealed three broad categories, health problems, health facilities and expectations of the community.

Conclusion: The study showed a high burden of health needs in the community and high burden of non communicable diseases among the community.
