Abstract

Assessment of the skeletal age provides significant and valuable information about the maturational status of the child to the orthodontist. It is useful in the treatment planning of dentofacial deviations, and in selecting and executing orthodontic retention procedures or facial surgery. The purpose of the study is to investigate and assess the reliability of the dental x-ray film in assessing mp-3 stages of the pubertal growth spurt in comparison with hand wrist and cervical vertebrae being kept as standards in a selected Chennai city population.

The result of this study reveal that the standard intra-oral peri-apical film was a reliable tool in assessing MP-3 stages of the pubertal growth spurt as it was able to relate to the skeletal development of the other skeletal maturity indicators such as hand wrist x-rays and cervical vertebrae , which were kept as standards in this study.
