Abstract

Clonidine one of the Alpha 2 adrenergic agonists is being used since many years as an antihypertensive agent. Recently the indications for these class of drugs is expanding especially after the introduction of Dexmedetomidine, the latest alpha 2 agonist. Dexmedetomidine has been approved as a short term sedative since 1999. It has several beneficial effects in the peri operative period, by decreasing the sympathetic tone decreases the stress response to surgery, laryngoscopy and intubation, lessens the anaesthetic requirements and decreases the intra ocular pressures. It also produces arousable sedation which makes it an important drug for monitored anaesthesia care (MAC) and awake craniotomies. Since it does not produce respiratory depression, it can be continued in to the post operative period and also can be used as an excellent sedative in intensive care unit(ICU) patients. Because of its analgesic properties it is becoming a popular adjuvant drug along with local anaesthetics for regional anaesthesia procedures as well. This review aims to improve the knowledge of the properties and applications of the wonder drug Dexmedetomidine, an alpha 2 agonist
