Abstract

Aims & Objectives: A study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of hypertension amongst doctors, and to identify certain risk factors amongst doctors. Materials and Methods: A Cross- sectional study in M R Medical College and Basaveshwara Hospital Gulbarga. 212 doctors selected randomly. They underwent anthropometric measurement, blood pressure and answered a pretested questionnaire. Statistical analysis: Proportion, odd's ratio. Results: The prevalence of hypertension amongst doctors was 32.07%. Out of which in female doctors it was 46.67%. Prevalence of hypertension was more in doctors with age more than 50 years. Family history of hypertension and stress were the risk factors positively associated amongst doctors. 59 doctors felt the stress often. The frequent emotional effect of stress was hard to concentrate 38.98% and the frequent physical effects were disturbed sleep and persistent indigestion. Conclusion: Practicing physicians involved in clinical care have good access to information on disease frequency and determinants. Therefore, knowledge and awareness regarding the health consequences of lifestyle changes are generally expected to be high among clinicians. This in turn could influence the prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension among them
