Abstract

Background: In order to broaden its base of services into the community in the context of medical education, it is not surprising that Social 2-4 Science is considered in different ways . A work model was devised at SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad. The teachers at the College were interviewed to obtain their views on teaching of Social Science in the Medical Colleges and the results are depicted. Method: Apilot study with a structured questionnaire was followed by the final format given to all the 139 teaching faculty. Results: The majority of the teachers had difficulty in comprehending the role of teaching social sciences in medical curriculum. The teachers who have responded were in favour of practical and field visits to teach case-based situations of social relevance. Learning of 'Communication Skills' was to be bolstered, by limiting the theory classes to the middle of the course and by elaborating the opportunities to learn the field realities by arranging interactive sessions between students, patients and families' of patients in their social context. A work model was proposed. Conclusion: Teachers perceive jeopardy in the course becoming too applied towards Social Sciences and in failing to provide the basic clinical ground they would prefer. However there is a welcome change observed by the authors among the medical teachers in their outlook and present understanding of social sciences in a span of 30 years between 1974 and 2004.
