The sudden outbreak and rapid spread of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in a global health crisis on a massive scale. Physicians and their healthcare teams called the frontline warriors, across the globe, swung into action, and started treating patients selflessly, with little regard to their own health and personal risk, in this hour of unprecedented crisis. Each one of us must appreciate the invaluable services rendered by the frontline warriors.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us the importance of maintaining strong protection measures by maintaining strict hygienic conditions. This is possible only by practicing a healthy lifestyle that aids in the development of a strong immune system. Maintaining hand hygiene is one of thevery important aspect of this practice. Apart from hand hygiene, a healthy diet, incorporated with required nutrients will help in building immunity. Hence, an active and healthy lifestyle can certainly enhance the immunity system and minimize infections.

The World Health Organization has suggested preventive and protective measures for the general upkeeping of sound health and also, specific to the COVID-19 pandemic. These guidelines include; 1. A nutritious diet that contains optimum levels of required nutrients to boost the immune system. These essential nutrients are proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates and vitamins, in optimum proportions, 2. Regular physical exercise of moderate intensity certainly aids in improving plasma immunoglobulin levels, and therefore our immune response, 3. Strict maintenance of hygienic conditions during food preparation, consumption, coughing, sneezing / blowing nose and while petting or breeding animals, 4. Proper therapeutic management of stressful conditions will also aid in improving the immune system, 5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol will help in building a strong immune system.

All these measures will certainly help in preventing the spread of Corona virus as well as H1N1 flu and several other infections. Physicians all over the world observed that strong preventive measures is a better option when compared to risking treatment with an unestablished line of treatment methods. All countries are keeping their fingers crossed and waiting with bated breath for the development of an effective vaccine to drive away the COVID-19 pandemic.

Let us all hope that Covishield and Covaxin being developed by the Indian pharmaceutical companies will prove to be successful in warding off this crisis.
